ELA- Cram Week! We spent most of our ELA time on Wednesday and Thursday doing the District Writing Assessment #3 which means we will be blitzing I Love Saturdays y domingos the first part of this week. We will begin the next unit on Thursday and carry it over Spring Break. From what I have read so far, I am really impressed with the growth your children have made in their informative writing skills, even since January. they all have worked very hard!
Math- Tomorrow we will finish Topic 12. I plan to review on Tuesday, then take the OPM on Wednesday/Thursday. We will not start Topic 13 until after Spring Break. Topic 13 continues with fractions. If you get a chance at home, please show your child a tape measure and have them measure several objects to the nearest 1/4 inch. For the most part, the majority of the class is understanding that measurement manufacturers mark not only fourths, but eighths, and sixteenths. With the minimal amount of exposure the textbook has with rulers, it would be beneficial for students to have several opportunities of seeing and identifying fourths on a ruler (eighths and sixteenths are a bonus!)
Other- This week is Red Ribbon Week. We will be discussing abstaining from alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. Discussion centered around the harmful side effects will be emphasized. I have always placed importance on the concept that the use of these substances harms the developing brain, and that the human brain is still developing until the mid twenties. Hopefully this gives that wiggle room needed to get around the legal issues that arise when minors become of legal age to purchase alcohol and/or tobacco.
Spring Break will be NEXT week, from April 1st- April 7th. This will be a regular 5-day week. Please help your child get to school on time each day. Ms. Russell's class has caught up to our class in attendance points! I hate being tied for last place for attendance. <insert tear> ;-(
Home-School Talking Points-
1. What is this months character education value? (Determination)
2. What activity did Ms. Cook (our school LCSW) do with the class on Thursday?
3. The guinea pigs returned to school on Tuesday this week. Why were they absent for a week? (Miss Tickles was sick and was under a vet's care.)
4. Easter Egg- Click here to read at what age is the rational part of the brain developed.
Silly Sally- Silly Sally likes to sneeze but not to cough. Silly Sally likes sitting but not standing. Silly Sally likes the zoo but not the aquarium. What does Silly Sally like?
Thank you,
Ms. Stroud
