I hope all of you have a safe and fun break. I just wanted to send out a couple of quick reminders.
1. The classes in 4th grade are competing with each other over the break. We are trying to see which class can read the most minutes. This can be completed in a couple of ways.
a. Through a new reading program called Reading Plus. Hopefully you received the flyer to this last week. I have put a link to the website on my ELA homepage. This program assesses each child's reading strengths and weaknesses, then assigns them activities to complete each week according to their comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency level. The assignments reset each week at midnight on Sunday. I am able to monitor their progress and will be awarding students for their perseverance in January and throughout the rest of the school year.

b. The second reading program is called myON. I send a flyer with information home last week. This is like having a Kindle account with 5,000 books on their website, all for elementary aged students. The class has LOVED this new resource. I have had several students logon at home just to read, as well as ask to do this here at school as a fast finisher reward. I am able to login and see how many minutes and which books the students are reading.

c. The last way is through traditional reading and logging minutes in your child's planner.
2. Please save and send your student with 3 (16-20 ounce) water/clear soda bottles during the first week of January. The lids (non-flip top) need to be sent as well. If you are able to collect extra bottles, that would be fantastic. When we begin our new science rotation, I will be teaching the water cycle and we will be creating a self contained model for each child to take home (and hopefully explain to you).
3. Did you child explain their mineral project to you? Hopefully they were excited to show this to you. Did they tell you about their Google Expedition? So much going on here at school!
4. Finally, please have your child assemble their math journal packets. It is so helpful to have this done at home. If you are unable to complete this over the break, please encourage your kiddo to do this the first week in January.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah (although it has already passed), and have a happy and safe New Year,
Ms. Stroud
