Upon direction from the District, teachers will begin official online instruction on Tuesday. I am assigning tasks through Pearson in math and ELA that will appear each day. I will continue to hold our morning and afternoon Google Meet sessions for students. Starting on Tuesday, they will be more instruction based, although we will continue with some of the fun things too! I have divided up some of the important topics below. If you have any questions, please let me know.
Virtual Office Hours- Tomorrow, I will be creating virtual office hours for parents. This will be through a Google Meet session. I will be available to answer questions on content, curriculum, and some tech issues during this time. Please keep in mind that there may be more than one parent in that session as well. Once I create these time slots, I will post them in Google Classroom, back on this page, and in Canvas. Please see the bottom of this post for all Google Meet Session links and times.
Google Meet Times- In our Team Meeting tomorrow, the third grade teachers will discuss shifting our afternoon Google Meet with students to better reflect the learning times of a regular school day. They will most likely shift from 3:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. At this point, I intend to keep the morning meeting at the same 1000 time spot. I will post the official afternoon times here when they are firmed up as well. Please see the bottom of this post for all Google Meet Session links and times.
Bags from Friday- Inside your child's bag is their math book, pencil bag, their science and Reading Street journals, and all of their loose papers from their desks. I have also included a makeshift white board. This is a sheet protector with a tan piece of card stock inserted for support. I placed an Expo marker in each pocket. In the back, is a 5-minute timed test for multiplication and division. You can time your child then just wipe the sheet protector clean. I also placed the Mr. Popper's Penguins class reading activity packet in this pocket as well. I emailed each parent instructions for logging into a program called Epic. The book Mr. Popper's Penguins has been assigned to the class. I will be reading 1 chapter each Tuesday and Thursday to the class during our afternoon session if your child would prefer to have me read them the book instead of reading it online. The remainder of the papers were loose papers from their desks. I have kept a journal, their class folder, Brag Tags, and Weekend News writings at school. They will be there in May when we return. Students will need to return their math books to school if/when we resume in person instruction in May.
Canvas- The District uses Canvas, an online learning platform, with middle and high school students. Two weeks ago, they requested elementary teachers create pages and use that platform as well. They did make an exception for those teachers already using Google Classroom stating that we may continue to use that platform for the remainder of this year. I have NO intention of requiring students to use Canvas. I will be duplicating the tasks in Google Classroom. Students will NOT be required to use Canvas if they do not feel comfortable login in and navigating a new system. Nearly every assignment created in Canvas (the important ones) will be assigned through your child's Pearson account. Pearson is accessed through Clever, a single sign on program separate from both Google Classroom and Canvas. Once you receive the email from the District with the login steps for Canvas, you may work with your child to understand this new platform or continue to encourage them to use Google Classroom.
Online Learning- I will be assigning several tasks through the Pearson platform. These assigned tasks replicate what we do in class. Many of the Reading Street tasks are short and do not take more than a couple of minutes. I have already assigned several "review" tasks from just before the COVID19 school dismissal period. They will be available Monday morning. It would be beneficial for you to review these with your child to ensure they understand how to navigate between tabs efficiently, without exiting the portal. I also have a enVision math quick check assigned for Monday from 13.5, the math assignment we discussed on the 13th. Students have completed Quick Checks in the past and should be familiar with that task. We will continue to run our Reading Street weeks from Thursday to the following Wednesday, in order to maintain continuity. We are fortunate to be a bit ahead of the curve and have covered the majority of the difficult material in math. I always try to finish prior to the end of year testing, which we were right on track this year as well. With the elimination of the end of year testing this year, we will be able to review concepts as needed in May in order to be better prepared for the structure and knowledge demands of 4th grade.
Online Learning Expectations:
Pearson Realize- curriculum instruction for math
Daily Online Tasks
Quick Check (5 multiple choice questions)- from previous day's lesson
Another Look (~2-3 minute video)- from previous day's lesson
Solve and Share (1 question)- today's lesson
Visual Learning (~3 minutes video)- today's lesson
Convince Me (1 question review from Visual Learning Video)- today's lesson
Today's Challenge (1 question)- assigned on the first 5 lessons of the Topic, often science based
Practice Buddy- Online independent work that is similar to the Independent Work (page 2) we usually do in class.
Math Workbook Tasks
Each lesson has 3 pages. The first two we do in class. The first two pages are the "Solve and Share, Visual Learning, and Convince Me" tasks from above. Your child may follow along and complete them as the program is displaying them on the screen. I will be working on video recording the page we do in class for your child to watch and complete their book-work page. The traditional homework page can be substituted for the Practice Buddy page online. I will accept EITHER form of the assignment. The Practice Buddy will self check. If you child opts to complete the paper assignment, please review those questions. I will be working on a way to provide the answers to the homework pages in the math book tomorrow.

Other Requested Daily Online Tasks- supplemental and differentiated curriculum- login through Clever.com
Lexia- a reading program (5-15 minutes). Students below level 14 should be completing 4 units each day. Students on or below level 12 should be completing 6 units each day. The end of third grade goal is to have Level 14 completed.
Reflex Math- students should obtain the "Green Light" 5 days/week (5-15 minutes)
Dream Box (2-3 lessons/day) each lesson should take about 6 minutes to complete
Google Classroom- This is where I assign other tasks for students to try. Some of them are fun games and others are highly engaging interactive tasks. Students will also access their online journals from Google Classroom. All Google Meet sessions are posted here as well.
Other Optional Daily Online Tasks- (links can be found here)
Prodigy- math gamification
Spelling City- All spelling words for the entire year are on my page. Students can practice their spelling words in multiple game formats. The premium feature has been enabled through June 30 of this year. Students should login using Google (CSDdocs).
Nitro Type, TypeTastic, Dance Mat- Typing games students can use to practice fluency and accuracy- please watch for PROPER KEYBOARDING FINGERING- links can be found in Google Classroom
Legends of Learning- Something I just found- looks pretty darn cool! I'll need to get feedback from the students, but it almost looks like a Prodigy type game but includes science as well. Link is in Google Classroom.
Wow, that's a doozy of a post! I tried my best to keep all of the information as short as possible, yet thorough. Please let me know if you have questions. Your child should be very familiar with things described in this post. I am doing my best to NOT throw new things in your/their direction right now.
Encourage your child to play outside at some point during the day, maintaining a social distance with others. I know that the recent request of Governor Herbert to eliminate play-dates and closing the play structures at playgrounds may be difficult for your child. The links on Mrs. Jerozal's Google Classroom page may help with some of these difficult times. I would encourage you to use them as often as necessary. She sent out a link to parents about 1.5 weeks ago. Also the Brain Booster teachers have a Google Classroom page with various activities in STEM, PE, Library, and Art that you may find engaging for your child.
