ELA- We have started our second story in Reading Street, What About Me? Please remember that I assess those skills and concepts on WEDNESDAYS. This gives students a full week to review the spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension skills before being tested. The Family Times packets are sent home on Wednesdays and should return to school each day. I assign 1 page each evening and we correct and review that everyday in class. Students receive stamps and points for completing the work. If you child does not do the Family Times work, please still have them bring the packet back to school. All students are expected to be engaged and to participate while we are discussing the assigned work. As a guideline, the majority of students state that the Family Times assignments take 5-10 minutes. Actually, many say less than 5 but I worry when it only takes 5 minutes. Yikes!
Math- Today we took the Topic 1 math OPM. There were a couple of kiddos that submitted their work before completing the test. The computer marks all incomplete questions as incorrect. That drives me CRAZY. You would think that there would be a simple code that could be written to eliminate that issue. Ugh. I was able to reassign the test, but it was frustrating for those students. The Math Skill packets that should be in your child's planner are a fast finisher activity and should be worked on in class and at home, if there isn't an assigned homework page. Each packet should take about 2-3 weeks to complete. It does NOT all need to be finished in one evening. I had two superhero students complete the entire packet last night. They were eager to receive another brag tag and move on in skills. (Both are now on multiplication!)
Other-
1. There is no school on Monday, September 2, 2019 in observance of the Labor Day holiday.
2. Brain Booster classes- Each teacher in the library, STEM, and P.E. classes has commented on the noise level and that the class is very chatty. I have discussed this with the class but if you could also talk with your child about being respectful when a teacher or adult is speaking, I would appreciate it greatly. I want ALL adults to know how amazing your children are and to not get wrapped up in their social chattiness. :-)
3. The school guidance counselor has requested that each child bring in a 2-pocket paper folder for our character education lessons. There is a note in your kiddo's planner about this.
Home-School Talking Points-
1. Music was played in the lunchroom today. Which class earned the privileged of selecting the songs played? (Mrs. Johnson's class)
2. We had a practice fire drill earlier this week. Where does our grade level line up outside? (Southwest lawn, by the driveway)
3. What is Quizizz? Did you child enjoy the program?
Thank you,
Ms. Stroud
