Enjoy your Thanksgiving break! No homework over the holiday, although students do need to complete their math journal prep work of cutting and pasting the new division packet.

Parents,
Math- We will be finishing our final multiplication topic on Friday and have our OPM on Monday and Tuesday, before the Thanksgiving break. I will be sending home the division math journal pages for students to cut out and glue in. Please refer to my examples if you have any questions. ELA- Our next Reading Street unit is Adelina's Whales. We will be testing that week on Tuesday instead of Wednesday due to the break. The opinion writing is also due on Tuesday, November 24, 2015. I am sending home the rubric with your child today. Please give your child a grade and return the essay by the 24th. I will give them a grade and send it home after Thanksgiving. If you notice that your child has deficiencies in their writing, they may correct them before turning it in to me. All students have a GoogleDocs account set up for them where they have been typing their essays. Science- The rocks and minerals OPM will be on Tuesday the 24th. Student journals should be coming home nightly to study from. This can count as their nightly reading! Other- FOOD DRIVE this week. Class wants a pizza party!!! Please donate if you can. :-) I have put the names of parent volunteers on the Google Calendar. I know there has been a couple of changes in work schedules so if the time doesn't work, please let me know. Have great day, Ms. Stroud Parents,
Just a quick reminder that the end of the first grading period is this Thursday. Students will not have school on Friday, although teachers will be here working on report cards. All work should be turned in by tomorrow including the narrative writing assignment from the middle of October. Students can access this through their CSDDOCS (Googledocs) account. ELA- The next Reading Street week is The Man Who Named the Clouds and will be tested Wednesday, November 18th. We are busy working on finalizing our argumentative writing assignment. Please look for that to come home next week for your review and guidance before I assign a final grade. Again, I will send home the grading rubric for you and your child to review before they submit their final essay. Math- Next week we will begin our final multiplication topic. Wow! After Thanksgiving, we will charge ahead with long division. We have now learned 7, yes I said 7 different ways to solve multiplication equations. I have asked that students become proficient in at least 2 ways, one being the old-fashioned Standard/Traditional Algorithm. Methods: 1. Standard/Traditional Algorithm (the one most of us were taught) 2. Breaking apart (prepares students for algebra) 3. Compatible Numbers (used for estimating and determining reasonableness) 4. Square method (quickly becoming my favorite method) 5. Partial products (easily shows place value and the value of numbers) 6. Area Model (visually shows amounts using base 10 blocks) 7. Lattice Method (quick method that doesn't require regrouping) I know this seems a bit overwhelming, but each method has its purpose, except for the lattice method- it's just a different way to multiply. Other- Please remind your kiddos to bundle up in the morning. We do live in Utah and the weather changes quite quickly. Students will be instructed to be outside unless the temperatures fall below 22 degrees or if it is extremely wet outside. Also, please remember that the school grounds are NOT supervised until 8:00 each morning. Thank you, Ms. Stroud Just wanted to brag about your children. Although a couple of kids are still finishing up the Topic 6 OPM on multiplication, I can't help but give a shout out to the students. So far 16 students have earned an 85% or better and the most common score is, drum roll please...........100%!!! Be sure to have your child show you their score. :-)
Parents,
It's hard to believe that we are in our first week of November. Time just zips by when you're having fun! I sure hope your kids are enjoying school as much as I am. :-) ELA- Our Unit 2 test will be next Wednesday. This is a review of the past 5 weeks of language arts skills. All narrative writing assignments need to be submitted no later than next Monday in order for me to get them on the report card. We are busy working on our Argumentative writing assignment. The kids are super excited with this essay. At this point, your child should have their first paragraph written. We have discussed the middle 3 paragraphs and I would like to have those wrapped up by next week. Please ask your child for the example paragraphs and requirements that were passes out last week. Math- Students will have the OPM (Opportunity to Prove Mastery) for Topic 6 tomorrow and Friday. Next Wednesday and Thursday, we will have our OPM for Topic 7. Only a few students are struggling with long multiplication and that is primarily due to the lack of fact fluency. Please have your child work on these basic facts. If needed, your child can come in at 7:50 to work on math facts in the classroom. After Thanksgiving, we will dive into long division. Science- We have completed our first science rotation on fossils. Our class is now with Mrs. Dahlgren studying rocks and minerals. As this unit begins to wrap up, I will let you know. Other- All fundraiser money is due this week. Please join us this Friday night for our fundraiser dinner and a movie. Dinner will begin at 6 with the movie CHIPWRECKED beginning at 6:30. Hope to see you there! As a reminder regarding the weather, please remind your kiddos to bundle up each day. It gets cold outside and all children will be going outside for recess unless they have a health related issue. I would also like to give a shout out to our AMAZING parents that volunteered their time on Friday. The kids had a blast! Thank you. Have a great week, Ms. Stroud |
